Shavon Revel, Winston Wright Jr. Shine at ECU Pro Day as NFL Scouts Flock to Greenville

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Pirate Nation was on full display Tuesday as more than 20 former East Carolina football players took the field at ECU’s annual Pro Day, hoping to impress NFL scouts and earn a shot at the next level. While many had solid performances, the day belonged to cornerback Shavon Revel, wide receiver Winston Wright Jr., and running back Rahjai Harris.

Revel, a projected first-round pick in next month’s NFL Draft, was the headliner despite still rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered late in the 2023 season. He participated in measurements and the bench press, posting 12 reps at 225 pounds — a strong number for a long, lean corner. Revel opted out of speed and agility drills as he continues his recovery.

“At the end of the day, no matter what round you go, if you're a dawg, you're a dawg,” Revel said. “If you can play, you can play.

I don't really pay attention to the mock drafts. You have to prove it to the coaches. That's just people's predictions and opinions of what they think you might be, or where you may go. I don't want to overthink things. I'm just taking it day by day and continuing to do what I'm doing, working hard."

Another standout was Winston Wright Jr., the former West Virginia and Florida State wideout who transferred to ECU this past offseason. Wright put together an All-American campaign as a kick returner in 2023 and served as one of the Pirates' top slot receivers.

On Tuesday, he caught everything during positional drills from quarterback Jake Garcia and reportedly ran a smooth 4.43 in the 40-yard dash. Many of his former teammates and current players cheered as he crossed the finish line.

“That support means a lot,” Wright said. “It’s a big reason why I came here. Just the brotherhood and the bond you see. They've got practice this afternoon. They could be out there getting ready for that. But they’re out here supporting us.”

Wright is viewed as a potential late-round selection or priority free agent, and alongside Revel, spent extensive time speaking with scouts after the day’s work.

Rahjai Harris, fresh off a 1,000-yard season, showed physicality and burst during drills. Despite being viewed as under-the-radar in a deep running back class, Harris hopes his Pro Day helped elevate his draft stock. Among those cheering him on was former ECU standout and current Baltimore Ravens running back Keaton Mitchell.

“Coming out here and living my dream, it’s definitely great,” Harris said. “Seeing all these teams giving us a shot, that’s all I need — a shot. I just want to get my pinky in the door. Just give me a shot.”

There was no shortage of Pirate pride on the field. In addition to several recently-graduated players working out, a few familiar faces returned to showcase their talents.

Former ECU starting lineman and Oregon guard Nishad Strother participated in offensive line drills alongside some of his former teammates, while former linebacker Xavier Smith, who has been out of college football for several years, made a return to Pro Day and looked to be in excellent shape.

Scouts from numerous NFL franchises were in attendance, closely evaluating players through a full slate of testing — including the 40-yard dash, vertical leap, shuttle drills, and position-specific work. For many, it was a final opportunity to leave a mark ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft or earn a rookie minicamp invite.
