John David Baker Confident in Offensive Growth After Four Spring Practices

GREENVILE— East Carolina Offensive Coordinator John David Baker is seeing a much different spring this year—and that's a good thing.

“Way less chaotic,” Baker said, comparing this spring to last year’s transition. “The continuity from both the staff and players makes a huge difference.”

With veteran quarterback Katin Houser sidelined, Baker highlighted the reps backup Jake Garcia is getting as valuable, noting his leadership and consistency. Baker also praised Raheim Jeter for his growth, adding that he’ll see more time with the first unit as spring progresses.

Running backs Marlon Gunn and Landon Montgomery were recognized for embracing larger roles following the departure of veteran Rahjai Harris, while transfers like Dyrell “D-Rob” Roberts have added depth and maturity to the receiver room.

“It's competitive depth across the board,” Baker said. “We’re deeper than last year at every position.”

Baker said the offensive line is also showing strong early signs, stressing the importance of building reliable depth to withstand a long season.

His top priority this spring? Taking care of the football. After leading the nation in interceptions last year, ball security has become a focal point. “We’ve proven we can be explosive, but if we protect the ball, we can be really good.”

Despite interest from other programs during the offseason, Baker said staying in Greenville was an easy decision.

“You don’t walk away from doing what you love, with the people you love, at a place that’s special.”
