Walk-On Trio, Including Punter Stumpf, Depart ECU as Transfer Portal Opens
East Carolina saw three walk-ons enter the transfer portal Wednesday as the spring window officially opened, headlined by punter Ethan Stumpf.
Stumpf had been competing for the starting punting job this spring alongside redshirt freshman Tomas O’Halloran. With O’Halloran appearing to gain the edge throughout camp, Stumpf opted to seek a new opportunity. He leaves the program with four years of eligibility remaining.
Wide receiver McCallum Wright also entered the portal after spending the past three seasons with the Pirates. A former preferred walk-on from Broughton High School in Raleigh, Wright served primarily on the scout team during his time in Greenville.
Quarterback Jake Garcia officially entered the portal as well, a move that had been reported Tuesday. Garcia played in nine games last season and started six, finishing with over 1,400 passing yards and eight touchdowns.
Rounding out the group is cornerback Keyshawn Jackson, the only walk-on of the three to see live game action. Jackson played in 11 games last season, contributing heavily on special teams and earning defensive snaps in three contests. He saw action in ECU’s Military Bowl victory over NC State, logging 11 snaps and delivering a memorable hit on quarterback CJ Bailey. Jackson opened the spring with some early reps on the first and second teams but later rotated with the third unit. He enters the portal with three years of eligibility remaining.
The NCAA’s spring transfer portal window runs from April 16 to April 25. ECU will conclude spring camp with its annual Purple-Gold game on April 26.
